Pick one local institution, one regional calendar and one recurring activity. That is enough for the first month. The Federation calendar is useful for seeing DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia together.

Introduce yourself to the office or membership contact at a nearby synagogue or JCC and say exactly what you are looking for—families with similar-age children, a learning group, volunteering or Shabbat hospitality.

Ask one practical question at a time. “Which grocery store is easiest on Friday?” will usually get better local advice than “Tell me everything about the neighborhood.”
